Today, I want to talk about a non-technical yet very important topic. We often focus on the English language, its vocabulary, and different accents. As developers, it’s almost everyone’s dream to work remotely in top countries, and for that, we work extensively on our English-speaking skills. However, speaking alone isn’t enough for successful communication. Here are a few key factors I’d like to suggest:
👉 Ensure Understandability: We often see people using heavy words or adopting accents to appear more learned. But what’s the point if the other person can’t understand you? It’s crucial to adjust your speaking style based on your audience. Speaking well is pointless if the person next to you can’t follow along.
👉 Maintain Clarity: Being clear and concise in your communication is essential. The listener shouldn’t struggle to understand or feel confused about what you’re saying.
👉 Use Fillers Appropriately: Fillers play a role in speech, but it’s important to use them wisely. Necessary pauses can enhance communication, but overusing fillers can become irritating.
👉 Practice Active Listening: Communication isn’t just about speaking; it also involves actively listening to the other side. Pay attention to the speaker and show proper engagement.
👉 Use Appropriate Gestures: Beyond verbal responses, it’s important to use appropriate gestures, such as nodding, body language, and facial expressions, to convey your engagement.
While there are many other factors, I find these points the most crucial. To conclude, communication should be like a TCP connection. Just as a successful connection in TCP requires a two-way handshake, real-life communication is not just about speaking but also about ensuring others understand you.
